Understanding this recall

What happened

Taylor Farms de Mexico is recalling Taylor Farms Blend Lett/rom Blend with Bag 4/5# Iceberg, one of many food-service lettuce and salad products sold under several brand names, because of potential Cyclospora contamination.

Why it matters

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that can contaminate fresh produce. It causes cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness whose main symptom is watery diarrhea, often with cramping, bloating, nausea and fatigue. Symptoms typically start about a week after exposure and can last weeks without treatment. Washing produce does not reliably remove it. These are mostly bulk food-service packs, like 4/5 lb cases, so the products may reach diners through restaurants and cafeterias.
